PCSW holds seminar at Govt Islamia College Civil Lines

Punjab Commission on the Status of Women organized a seminar on “16-Days Activism Campaign to end violence against women and girls” at Government Islamia College Civil Lines Lahore. Each year, from November 25th to December 10th, the United Nations, international agencies, Governments across the globe, non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations working for the promotion of women’s rights, partake in an international campaign to end violence against women and girls.

The 16 Days of Activism Campaign begins on 25th November, International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on 10th December, International Human Rights Day. In seminar, Chairperson PCSW, Fauzia Viqar stated that the stability and growth of any society is directly linked to the status of women.

Therefore, to raise the voice against any act of violence against women and girls must be taken as a great cause to provide the safeguard to the social order. Rights-based education must be promoted in all schools and colleges, to ensure a more empowered, gender sensitized and inclusive society. Chairperson PCSW urged students to contribute actively in building a strong, value-based society that empowers women across the board. Adding more, PCSW operates a toll-free helpline (1043) in order to provide information about women’s rights and services, and registers complaints in case of lack of response or inaction by government functionaries in Punjab. Commissioner Lahore Division Abdullah Khan Sumbal uttered at the moment that the government is fully dedicated to end the violence against women which needs the cooperation of all concerned to make it successful move. Equal opportunities for all to contribute in human development is need of the clock. Youth is big asset for any country which must be well equipped to face the challenges of upcoming era. It is pertinent to mention here that during 16 Days of Activism this year; PCSW aims to sensitize key stakeholders to undertake concrete measures to end violence against women and girls in Punjab. For this purpose, PCSW has been conducting a series of events in all divisions of Punjab, to raise awareness and rally support for elimination of gender-based violence. During the period of 16 days, awareness sessions on women’s rights and laws for the protection of women have been planned in district-level colleges for boys and girls. Awareness and information sharing sessions are being held at different departments. Project Manager PCSW Transitional Homes for violence effected Women Zaineb Jafari briefed the audience on laws with new amendments, rights of women and initiatives taken by Punjab government. In seminar, Principal College Abdul Latif, teachers and PCSW officers along with a big number of students were present.
